Bike Rack Request Guidelines

1. Rack must be on public property, and of "post and ring" type.

Bicycle racks requested through this program must be located on public property. Public property includes most sidewalks, schools, parks, city parking lots, and city buildings.

Boston and Cambridge use "post and ring" style racks for sidewalk installations because they most efficiently use space, maximizing the number of racks that can be installed in constrained locations. Exceptions can be made by staff on a case-by-case basis.

2. Sidewalk must be at least 8 feet wide.
8 feet allows a bicycle rack to accommodate two bicycles at the rack while providing enough space for pedestrians. Anything less than 8 feet will violate accessibility requirements.
3. If parallel, must be 2 feet from curb.
This allows bicycles to park without being hit by vehicles.
Multiple racks must be at least 8 feet apart end-to-end.
4. If perpendicular, must be 4 feet from curb.
This allows enough room from the street for the bicycle.
Multiple racks must be at least 3 feet apart side-to-side.
5. At least 4 feet is needed from obstructions.
Bicycle racks must be at least 4 feet away from walls, posts, trees, or mailboxes.
